e-Newsletter Autumn 2016

The continuing support for FOSFA’s Trade Education programmes held at the Royal Holloway University of London in Surrey was once again evident with 28 delegates, representing 16 countries, attending the Middle Managers Course in June, and 46 delegates, representing 15 countries, attending the Basic Introductory Course in September.

The Middle Managers Course provided an insight to a variety of topics with many experienced speakers coming from different countries and sectors in the trade. The Course offered an insight into Shipping and Shipping Market Conditions, Maritime and Documentary Fraud, Piracy, an update on Contracts including the new Flexitank Contracts, Arbitration and Handling Compliance from a Superintendent’s Perspective.

Mr Dorab Mistry, of Godrej International Limited, provided an afternoon session on “Understanding the Market Outlook for Vegetable Oils”, which attracted the full attention of the audience, and Mr David Mielke, of Oil World, gave a full-on presentation on the “Fundamentals of the Veg Oil and Biofuels Market”, extending into “future challenges, risks and opportunities”.

With the aim of assessing the delegates’ efforts and achievements during the course, the delegates were assigned a course project addressing this year the increasing demand for accreditation and certification.

Middle Managers Course – June 2016

The Basic Introductory Course covered the elementary aspects relating to the international trade of FOSFA, for example contracts, contract referred documents, shipping, trade finance, technical matters and dispute resolution (arbitration).

Delegates took part in interactive and group exercises, including a much enjoyed Mock Appeal. Delegates also received presentations from Ms Renee van Schijndel, of Croda Industrial Chemicals, giving a detailed introduction into Oleochemicals and Mr Svend Foyn-Bruun, of Odfjell, on the Shipping Market from An Owner’s Perspective.

Basic Introductory Course – September 2016

In order to confirm the extent of knowledge that delegates carried into this course and to judge their progress throughout the week, they were given a series of exercises based on various parts of the syllabus.

The culmination of the delegates’ efforts on both the Middle Managers Course and the Basic Introductory Course was celebrated at an Award Ceremony Luncheon, held at the impressive Tallow Chandlers Hall in the City of London, where winners able to attend from each course were presented with certificates for their achievements by the Master of the Company, Mr Richard Fleck CBE.
