A night of celebration and reunion

The stage was set in London for a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of FOSFA International and a long-awaited reunion of colleagues and friends from the trade.

Although attendance didn’t quite match the previous Dinner in 2019 when over 700 people gathered in Amsterdam, the FOSFA Council were determined to go ahead with this year’s event. The trade responded enthusiastically with 295 members and their guests converging on London Evolution, Battersea on Thursday 4 November 2021 for a memorable evening.

President, Mr Daan Vriens warmly welcomed members and guests and on behalf of the FOSFA Council, saluted the industry that “had managed to keep the vital food chain running in an environment of high volatility, record oil prices and unprecedented supply chain disruptions while mostly working from home”. He also recounted how joining the FOSFA Council had enabled him to “reconnect with lots of old friends” and reminded him that there “is certainly something special about oil traders”.

He went on to remember those people we had lost over the past two years including the recent death of Past President, Mr Hanns W Salzer Levi (1989/90) who sadly passed away on 21 October.

Mr Vriens warmly welcomed Stuart Logan who retired in August 2020 after 27 years of dedicated service to FOSFA and who was joined by his wife Geralyn. It was a fitting occasion to thank Stuart, wish him a fond farewell, and formally introduce his replacement, Iain Nicol who took over as Chief Executive and Secretary.

He also used the occasion to announce the launch of a new annual educational bursary in partnership with the Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers in recognition of Stuart’s 27 years of service to the Federation and the industry. The new bursary will provide four annual awards worth £2,500 each and give deserving candidates the opportunity to attend FOSFA’s residential education courses that will be hosted at the University of Greenwich from 2022 onwards.

Special guests from Kindred Associations included Director General of Gafta, Ms Jaine Chisholm-Caunt, Master of the Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers, Mr Oliver Kirby-Johnson, and Clerk Brigadier David Homer MBE.  In addition, Mr Vriens was delighted to welcome three Past Presidents, Mr Mike McKenna (1987/88), Mr Martyn Woolf (1988/89) and Mr Christian Meinich (2016/18).

Please enjoy images of the evening. You may also wish to listen to the President’s speech.
