The Evaluation of Products

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Working Group on the Evaluation of Safety and Pollution Hazards (ESPH) met during the meeting of the sub-committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 2) in January.

Intertanko, represented by Mr Ajay Gour (Senior Manager, Vetting & Chemicals) participated in the meeting.

The Evaluation of Products

Pure or Technically Pure Products (List 1)

ESPH evaluated two proposals for inclusion in List 1 (All Countries, No Expiry Date) of the MEPC.2/Circ. These products were approved according to the proposed carriage requirements in their submissions.

Used Cooking Oil

This product will be added to the MEPC.2/Circ and can be shipped under these requirements immediately. The Group also agreed that with the addition of this new entry for used cooking oil, fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) derived from used cooking oil could be shipped using the generic FAME entry in the IBC Code. Used cooking oil will have the footnote (m) appended to it.

As this product has been assigned a “Category X” it would require a pre-wash to be conducted. However, it should be noted that carriage requirements for this product have been assigned without the submission of scientific data. This was taken as a precautionary approach and that relaxation of carriage requirements can be considered on the basis of submission of GESAMP Hazard profile data.
